UK Industry Associations join forces to encourage members to become (CMP’s) Certified Meeting Professionals

MPI UK & Ireland are working with leading industry associations to promote professional certification. MPI, ISES, HBAA, ABPCO, EVCOM and MIA are supporting the CMP and have invited their members to register for the MPI CMP Boot Camp on July 6-7. Led by Skills Funding Agency registered Leeds Beckett University the Boot Camp is 2 days of sessions that cover 10 of the CMP syllabus domains.

The CMP programme is a globally recognised certification owned and managed independently by the Convention Industry Council (CIC), an organisation formed by 33 member organisations including MPI, ISES, SITE and PCMA. There are over 10,000 certified events professionals holding the CMP across the globe.

“Whatever your association affiliation, certification is key and the CMP is the internationally recognised benchmark. It is not an easy process, nor a cheap one. MPI do not own the CMP, there are no self-interests and this collaboration, and the strong endorsements from these associations, suggests there is a desire for this and that the benefit is for all regardless of particular association membership.”
Beri Kockaya, VP Certification, MPI UK&I

“The HBAA is very happy to endorse CMP Certification as a recommended route for professional development. We are currently reviewing our own L&D program and recognise the time and resource that MPI has invested in developing this valuable and credible process which drives quality standards and best practice for our hugely talented and committed sector workforce.”
Chris Nagle, Chair of HBAA Learning & Professional Development Committee Chair.

“CMP is a well-established and respected professional qualification. At a time when our industry sector is growing in prominence it is essential that all sectors establish a culture of ongoing development and professionalization. MPI boot camp is a fantastic experience and a way of sharpening professional skills and building a valuable network.”
Marco Forgione, CEO, EVCOM

“Raising standards within the meetings and events industry has always been at the heart of The Meetings Industry Association and AIM, the standard for venues and suppliers. Therefore, we are pleased to support the CMP programme and recognise its contribution in raising quality standards and professional development for individuals within our fantastic industry. We believe it will complement the work of AIM and look forward to seeing continued development within the meetings and events sector.”
Jane Longhurst, Chief Executive, Meetings Industry Association

‘”There’s been a lot of talk about how conference management can become recognised as a profession. ABPCO’s PCO members are often responsible for significant budgets and for risk assessments that affect thousands of delegates, requiring skills and experience gained through hard work over a long time. The importance of good education and training cannot be underestimated, particularly with increasing regulation and scrutiny of our working practices. Accreditation of training programmes will take us a long way towards our goal of professional recognition so ABPCO is pleased to join MPI and other industry associations to support this initiative.”
Caroline Windsor, Joint Chair, ABPCO

“ISES supports the CIC as the standard bearer for event industry professional development. The mobility of professional qualifications creates global opportunities for the people that hold them. I would recommend that event professionals think about the advantages of mobility and the status that the qualifications afford them.”
James Morgan, Chair, ISES EMEA

MPI Webinars Providing Online Education

i May 26th No Comments by

There are new webinars taking place at

You can get credits towards your CMPs as well as learn about current topics in the industry. Whether you’re studying towards your Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation or just want to keep up with the latest information, webinars are a great way to do so. The format gives you chance for interaction even though you might not be even on the same continent with the presenter. And if you happen to miss the actual webinar when it takes places, they are recorded and you can access them at any time you wish afterwards.

These webinars are specifically good for the CMP candidates. Each one hour webinar is focusing on a specific area of the topics you need to cover for CMP. You can for example dive into what are ROI and ROO and how to measure them properly. One interesting topic is education itself. There’s more and more free content available, but how do you determine what is good and what is not. Prepare for the trends that might affect your work as a meeting planner. The trends are also in focus on the Meetings Outlook webinar. This gives the participants to take a moment and look ahead.

Remember to check out the coming webinars and if you miss any of them, check back later as they will be available for viewing afterwards. The Professional Development on Demand sessions can be found here.

MPI Webinars are complimentary for MPI members, but non-members can purchase access.

i Feb 23rd No Comments by

Pacific World (, the integrated global DMC and Event Management organisation, has signed up 24 staff members, who represent four of its European destinations (namely Spain, France, Monaco and UK), to undertake the MPI CMP Boot Camp and help prepare their employees for the Convention Industry Council´s Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) certification. The Boot Camp will be held in Barcelona, Spain on February 23rd and 24th.

Pacific World

The event planning and management company is one of the first to sign up for the in-house boot camps that have been developed by the UK Centre for Events Management at Leeds Beckett University on behalf of MPI UK and Ireland.

This European initiative builds on a similar initiative announced recently in Singapore for a further 22 of Pacific World´s employees, (based across the company´s Asia locations), to train for the CMP examination.

MPI UK and Ireland President, Miguel Neves, who recently gained his CMP certification has welcomed the move.

“It is great to see buy-in by the industry and in particular to see an agency committed to getting high level education to prepare their staff for the CMP examination. We are delighted with the content of the boot camp which covers not only the ten knowledge domains in two days, but also uses best practices, group activities and real-time scenarios, to provide an effective all-round learning experiences for planners.

Mark Barber, Regional Director for Pacific World Europe, explains: “Pacific World has acknowledged that the events industry is at a turning point and that today´s clients are looking for a reliable events partner, who recognises among other things, the importance of continued staff development, to deliver a world-class event experience. The CMP training and certification will provide our staff with important skills and know-how to deliver the needs of our clients and at the same time, we believe existing and new clients will recognise the value of working with a partner whose staff understand and all speak the same language.

The successful completion of the CMP training and certification in our European and Asian locations, will complement existing CMP professionals, within the team of our alliance partner, ACCESS Destination Services.

Together, the Pacific World / ACCESS global team of CMP qualified professionals will aim to ensure a consistent and compliant way of working, along with exemplary operational standards, regardless of the destination our clients choose from our extensive portfolio of possible event locations.”

VP for Education on MPW UKI Board of Directors, Jane Baker of Freeman XP comments: “The CMP has been a core part of our vision to support the professional development of our industry. There has been significant interest on the certification and boot camp from agencies, so this in-house solution adds to what we can offer in the UK and beyond, alongside the scheduled boot camps that will run twice a year.”

MPI will be running the next CMP Boot camp in London on 6th and 7th July 2015. More details on this and future boot camps can be found on the website

It’s time to raise the standard

i Oct 1st No Comments by

The Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) accreditation is very different to a degree as it is focused on knowledge, skills
and experience.

It’s truly international and covers a multitude of industry and practical skill sets, which I have used and continue to use
throughout my job. You must also go through a recertification process every five years with an updated syllabus, making it
an ongoing certification that enables lifelong learning.

The accreditation distinguishes certified meeting professionals as individuals passionate about their profession. It results in a competitive advantage, better working conditions and higher salary expectations. This also leads to higher level conversations between CMPs.

I would be delighted for all associations and other bodies to support and promote the CMP accreditation. A total of 33 Convention Industry Council membership associations, including MPI, ISES (International Special Events Society), ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association), Site and PCMA (Professional Convention Management Association), all endorse and promote the CMP certification, which is the international standard.

More than 10,000 designated holders in 46 countries are testament to its global recognition. This is coupled with the adoption of the International Standards, the de-Americanisation of the process recently and the ability to take the exam in London or Manchester, for example. While others in the future may offer qualifications, the CMP is nearly 30 years old, is recognised around the world and is the standard that international procurement directors will understand. When attending events with other international association event organisers, for example, I don’t have to explain the letters CMP to them. They know what it is.
